What Would John Simpson Do?

  1. John- LOVE your new site! Now I can be "in the know" about all things John Simpson! Perhaps there should be a section on John's favorite movie quotes like "Instead of the Mahi-Mahi, can I get just the one Mahi, because I'm not that hungry?" or "This is not a democracy, it's a cheerocracy" Lynette

  2. John, I am a stylist that I think is stuck. I tend to use like a thousand foils to create a blonde that has demension. Can you help me to find a different approach to developing a faster method?

  3. Hey John, That was a sick color class. In Schectady NY on September 14th at Glen Sanders. Loved it. Here is the stupid thing though. When I got home and reviewed my notes I didn't write down the color formulas for the second model. "Eva Mendes." Chocolate brown. Can you send them to me. Wonder if you might want to include them in the training packet for reference in the future. Then you won't get these kind of crazy emails, haha. I'm a a commercial makeup artist honing my hair skills. Check out my website at www.makemefabulous.com. And thanks for the great class and getting back to me. Alayne

  4. Hey John. Just wanted to write a note of thanks for coming to Spokane. We don't get people of your calibur in our redneck of the woods. My staff and I really enjoyed it and you challenged and educated us above and beyond our expectations. Thank you again. Kasey ( LOL, I used to be fat.) of 14th and Grand salon.

  5. Dear John, Will you marry me? Thanks a heap! --Victoria T.

  6. Sakari Salon would like to THANKYOU. Fabulous class you had everyone thinking outloud. We now have a great start to the season. The ideas are flying and you have the staff feeling recharged.

  7. Hi John loved your class in Memphis. I have an older lady XL 5A with lvl 4gish LL and really bad lv 8/9 brassy, gold highlights. She is less 24% grey. Im going to do her base and ends via compact foils from the class. She "Hates RED and Orange". Id like to soften base up to between 5/6 B controlled! and bring HL down to a 7 and try and diffuse some of the darker LL. Heres what Im thinking: NG: 25 vol/15CC 5N/25cc 6SB or std N/B and A diffuse LL w/40 vol and BC w/7mb fill H/L with gold pre-pig and then 10 vol 7/gb & 7/n or I can just do an overlay after I do NG and diffuse darker areas. Im basically doing "basement" hair right now while looking for a salon thats a good fit as Ive recently moved to another state. Your opinion would be great as I dont have my "security blanket" and dont want to make her an ugly mess. She has warm eyes and warm/olive skin. Thank you

  8. John, Just attended your class in Depew, N.Y. I have been in the profession over 40 yrs and still learning. Loved your class , can't wait to start reformulating some of the colors and trying new placements Thanks again

  9. John loved all the photos from TrendZoom, you guys are a great inspiration. Whatr are some of your favorite "toner" formulas when lightening lvls 3 - 6 darker/med browns? Especially the latino and persian hair that tends to be coarser and not pull up well. Some formulas for carmel color/pretty kopper/coffee-toffee shade. I tend to get stuck using same thing and we know we cant do that on everyone. Thank you!

  10. John, One of my clients brought in the model for rockmantic trendzoom 2008. I was wondering if that color was used with max reds or elumen if so please share the formula please. I have a basic idea but i want to see if we are on the same page. Thank you so much and by the way you are a hair GENIUS and i couldnt ever get enough of your education.

  11. hi john. i have a client who wants to be a platinum blonde....her re-touch is a level 3 and each time i do it i've tried different techniques to reach that platinum level but i still cant get there....i always end up with gold that even the strongest toner wont relieve....i'm looking to you for advice....thanks and happy holidays!

  12. John,What do you see as far as the trend in cuts and color this yr? thanks Heather

  13. Hi John. I had the pleasure of seeing you and Deb Gavin in Baltimore fall 08'.I loved the class. I work with many different people and we have all been to many classes and yet one question still remain's.....What is the BEST way to use the Goldwell Color Remover? Thank's and I look forward to hearing from you.P.S. See you in Santa Monica this fall!

  14. I was wondering if you could tell me the formulation of the Silver/Grey color on the cover of this year's Goldwell Education booklet. I can't seem to find that info and I'm bummed because I plan on wearing it myself. Thank you for the help! Tara Hedenberg

  15. Bon Jour. I am in lust with the silver/grey color the model on the front of this year's education book and I looking to re-create it on a model for vlog we are doing at our salon. I was hoping you could help me with the formulation. She is a full level 10 and I plan to clean her canvas further before we do anything else. I await your reply with breath that is baited. Thank you. Tara

  16. soNmFA Excellent article, I will take note. Many thanks for the story!

  17. John........I have seen you on Scissor Boy and can not get over how you do it..... i dont really know how to turn some one blond with out using a tun of foil... any tips? also when i try to get close to the root i get TIGER STRIPES. I am 14 years old and in hair school and having a hard time with people giving me a chance to learn. if u would give me some advice that would be great! thank you. josh:-)

  18. John, Thank you so much for an amazing class. I was so happy to be fed new and exciting color nourishment from...you. It is so nice to know there are people out there that speak our language (other than the color itself! lol) and can affim my excitement for my craft! You are trully an inpiration! Thanks, Heather

  19. Hello John, Just wanted to say thank you for coming into our salon on March 22 @ Jenniffer and Co! I am a new hairstylist starting out and I really appreciate the time you took with me. You have inspired me to be a bit more daring than being more than chocolate and vanilla. I don't think I will ever look at a picture of a sunset as just a sunset. I will now take a picture and make it and interpretation to someones hair. So thanks again and you inspire me to go big! Amanda

  20. Hey John, I'm a student from KY and I sat in on your Color Zoom 2010 class that you taught this weekend in Chicago. I just wanted to say that I thought it was incredible and I learned a whole lot. You rock! Are students able to enter the color zoom contest? I am a senior student and want to become a master colorist once I graduate and begin my career. Thanks again for the great information. I learned so much. -Kevin Ford

  21. Dear John, I have a question about goldwell fillers. I have never used or been taught about fillers, pleeaaassse educate me on this. Why are they all warm? When do I use each color?

  22. Hi John, I have a client who went pre-maturely grey at the age of 16 (hereditary) and is now 47 She is fair skinned with a reddish complexion and blue eyes, with curly fine hair. I have recently been using Goldwell 7N in the Topchic, having tried other combinations of 7B which brings out too much red and recently put some blond highlights in but it washes her out and fried her hair. She is 100% white not grey. What shade/ color combination would you suggest that isn't high maintenance for this client? she talks about wanting to go natural as she is tired of coming in every 3 weeks for touch ups. Would love to send her to you to do your magic but would settle for your advice which I value. Thanks John and looking forward to your reply

  23. hey john!!!!! i'm sooooooo glad i found u! LOVE LOVE LOVE u! well i've been having trouble with 11 and 12 series.... they tend to get real gold. is there a trick for that at all? let me know!!!!! thanks!!!! houa

  24. Hi john, First off I attended your class in seattle and am loving the rose pattern. It was exactly what I've been looking for dimensional coloring! Thank you!!! I have a question on decolorizing.I went to one goldwell class that said to use a color remover first then to use blonding cream afterwards to remove even more pigment. Then my boss went to another class and that instructor told her to do the blonding cream FIRST then the color remover...So were just wondering which one is correct or if both are and when to use which? I really respect your work and would love to hear what you think. Thank you so much!!! Hannah Bradley from Au Salon in Portland, OR

  25. Hey John, I was in you color presentation at Valley Ho in Scottsdale this last sunday. I was searching for doorway out of the horizontal block foil prison!! Thank you for the Rose, the naked way out. Surly enjoyed your sense of humor, how true it is. Looking forward to your class on monday. Chas. Brennen, I was front row on your left. Thanks agian!!!!!

  26. Hi john, I am a stylist who reasontly covered my 10b and 8b hair with 5rb.Which has done some fading, thank heavens. After I color removed most of it then put on 7mb. I am a natural 7. I know diffrent ways to get my blonde back, but what is the safest way. I will stay dark before I will burn up my hair. which is what I would tell a customer. So help me. I know you know how:) Oh and a ? is color remover damaging to the hair?

  27. John, I would just like to say, Dolce loved your class today! You truely inspired me to find what makes me tick as well as try new things.(not an easy task) There is nothing worse than a hair stylist that does the same thing on every client. Thanks again!

  28. Hey John. Dylan here from Studio MZ in Cleveland. I just got the BTC email w/ a new blonde formulation from you. it says that you're using 40 mls of 20 vol, 10 mls of 7BSG and 20 mls of 8GB. are you really only using 10 mls of 7BSG or is that a misprint? also, are you using this for a natural 6 or a 7? thanks John! D

  29. John, I recently attended your class in Denver and found myself to be very inspired by your techniques. I'm a huge fan of your work, so I hope you're not offended by me asking you a non-hair related question, I've only been in the industry for the past six months and just had to quit my first salon job. Jobs are skimp in Colorado Springs so it looks like I'll be taking a position at a Supercuts. The company is respectable and the employees are so nice, but I have a concern. Can working in a "chop-shop-salon" make me unemployable at a high end salon? All of my HairSnob friends keep telling me this and I'd be willing to move to a different city in order to find the right salon if this is the case. Thanks for your time and input. Sincerely, Sarah

  30. WOW John what a great class you gave us yesterday at Neuvo Salon. I love the way you look at life....it's all about making the memories You make me want to be better and learn more and try new things....thanks...I can't wait to see you in Chicago in October. Thanks again, karla or karlie What about having print out of your bullet points?

  31. OMG! Mr. Simpson!! I've seen different write ups about your fab career & in the May The colorist with Dimitriou Tsioumas. So I just wanted 2 drop u a few lines to say thanks for all you've taught me @ the beginning of my career @ PBA. Seems like eons ago but somethings always stick with u throughout your life! Best luck to u in all that u do! Looks like you don't need 2 much luck just that awesome attitude that I remember from smithfield st...lol Kim Sands/Powers

  32. Hi John, I had a great time in your class. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your genius. I always say that if I can learn at least one thing in a class it was so well worth the money and the time spent. Well I learned allot more than one thing and that is FRIGEN AWESOME. I can't wait to see you again and enjoy another one of your motivating classes. Thanks again. Jose Rojas at HiLites Hair Studio

My question is if I use the rose petal technique does it matter if the client where's a center part? Also do I have to do low light in the petals or can I do just highlights. Look for to your answer. Mandy from Panico salon n spa!!

  38. john, I am in need of a formula for a sandy blonde. Possible a neutral tone maybe a level 8. I really don't want warmth, something that looks natural. Can you help me?

  40. I have a male client who is more than 75% gray. I'm using colorance intensive 20mls. 8nn, 5mls. each of 9na/9gb (with just a ml. of 8sb.) He's wanting more gray coverage. I'm guessing I need to go to Topchic. Any suggestions on a formula? He does not want any red! Thanks so much.

  41. Myself and another stylist have recently switched over to Goldwell and so far love it. Do you know of any classes ANYWHERE near the Chattanooga area any time soon?

  42. Hi John, My colourist prelightened my hair to a level 7 (natural is around a 4) and it came up really orangey-yellow. She put a level 7 ash on top, then a level 6 ash on top, and though it is much better, it still has orange/yellow undertones, and I wanted it a light ash brown, no red/orange/yellow at all. I like it almost grey brown. She uses Goldwell colours, could you please tell me what you would do in this situation so I can give her an exact formula to use? We are getting nowhere! Thanks so much. Ayesha x

  43. I am doing a report on mentors in the cosmetology industry and I chose you because I love your work. Its pure art. I wanted to know more of your educational background and who your mentors are, It would be greatly appreciated.

  44. Hi John, I desperately need your help with this serious “blonde to brunette” case! My client has been blonde for almost 10 years (she’s now a level 10 which is brassy on the midshaft) and now would like to go to level 7. Can you please help me with a formula for creating beautiful, elegant, rich brown level 7 neutral cool that is not reddish or coopery? She’s got brown eyes and light skin and neutral cool colors work really well for her. Also she would prefer to use Colorance as it’s much gentler than Topchic and her hair is quite damaged. Thank you a million!! Marina.

  45. Hi John! I had the pleasure of taking a class from you last year here in the Mile High City. I have a toning-issue that I can't seem to resolve. this is probably a pretty basic question but since I'm still relatively young to the business I'm going to ask; I have some clients who are a warm level 6 (think 6N+GG or 6Nbp).....when I try to hilight them to a nice 8-level (I use 20Vol Gentle Silklift, because 40Vol Blonding Cream Ash doesn't get them light enough) the hilights come up a very warm 8-level (on the edge of Blorange). I struggle with toning them to a nice 8-carmely color (think 8GB ) because every time I try to do this it still comes out too gold/orange. I've tried 8SB but that just mutes everything back down to brown.....which is not what I want. Any ideas? How should I think about this in my head?

  46. dear john I went to a salon to have my hair lightened fgor the summer. my hair is lightbrown dirty blond it always lightens natural in the summer stupid me getsher hair cut last week i cannot sit for too long have pelvic pain and I.C. 50. Hi John! I wanted to thank you for spending time with us at Eric Fisher Salon a few months ago. We REALLY enjoyed you- all of the great knowledge and tips that you shared with us and also your fun personality, sense of humor, and positive energy all around! I thought of a question for you....I'm trying to work out a formula for a "gun metal grey" to be applied to white hair. I've tried some things that have worked out ok, but thought I would see if you have a certain formula that you just loved. I would appreciate and treasure the advice! Thanks so much! Your friend, Trish

  52. Hello, John. I am currently a cosmetology student looking forward to being a great colorist. What advice can you give me to start my journey?

  53. Hi John! I have a client with fine, natural level 7 hair with brassy level 6 salon color midshaft to ends. She wants to go back to her natural with blonde foils. I have been foiling her Using silklift strong -10vol at the root & 20vol on the midshaft ends. I then reapplied to the ends with fresh silk lift strong and 20vol 30 mins after the first application. I waited another 20 mins then rinsed. At this point a toner isn't the results I was looking for. The foiled ends are still brassy. What do I do? Ali

  54. Dear John, I got a blonde problem, all the problems come from blonde, don`t they?:) I travel a lot so I can not trust someone I don`t know , in this situation I trust myself more :) So I have a almost brassy 7 base color which I applied couple theys ago, and covered my balyages mostly but after showering twice they started coming back slightly. I want a honey ash color for my base and, platinum very natural looking just like from the sun, but not brassy of course highlights. I would like to purchase gold well products so if you can give some advice on the formulas that i should use, I would greatly appreciate! You are so awesome I would`t ask anyone else since I`m too picky:)

  55. Dear John! I can't find the diagram on how you do a full blonde and make it look dimensional.. which was talked about in I believe question 2. If you could email it.. post it or direct me to a site that would be amazing... Sorry for any inconvenience I'm such a visual person!

  56. I have a client with level 6 hair naturally and she previously put a box color on it and made it a very gold orange tone. About a level 8G. I previosly filled the hair and put a level 7n with 20vol on roots since there is some grey and 7mb on ends with 10vol. She wanted some highlights on top so it wouldnt be too dark so i did 20 vol with silk lift bleach. Now after 2 months of waiting she has level 6 roots regrowth with a warm level 7 midshaft to ends. What formula would you recomend to make her color look back to her natural color with some highlights on top that is not brassy.

  57. Hey John, I just wanted to contact you and tell you that you are the BEST platform artist that I have seen. I drove two hours to see this event in Tampa and it was so worth! Not only are you a RIOT, but you are so so very talented/skilled. I was very inspired leaving the event and now as a somewhat new stylist (2years experience) to the profession I feel like I actually have a purpose in this business and not only because I am obsessed with the industry! Just the way you explained things really made sense and spoke to me. Thank you so much for that. Take care and "Work" ;-) -Your forever fan, Kelcie "Life is not a dress rehearsal...Live it, Love it and Create it!" -My new motto

  58. Help John The problem Is actually with my own hair. I've been using a 6VR on my roots and Elumen PK@all over the whole head for about 2 years. We've returned it 3 times. Tried a silk lift shampoo and even a full head of oxy with 20vol in foil. It's just getting to be more of a mirky salmon/9PV kind of color. My target color is somewhere around a 7KV. The whole salon is stumped and we know you can help. We've attended many of your classes and you are an inspiration to all of us thanks for your time Dianne Thanks for your time. Dianne
